Books were displayed initially at UCLA Center for African American Studies Library Fall in conjunction with AALISA (African American Library and Information Science Association) 1994, Amistad Research Center at Tulane University in September 1995, and California State University San Marcos in 1996 emphasizing the right to free speech of communities interacting with African Americans.

Maya Angelou, Richard Wright, Alice Walker, and Ralph David Abernathy are targets of controversies and censorship.
